The Erotic as Power

We are still so scared to put words to the erotic! And the quote above says it all!

In her fascinating essay, The Erotic as Power, the phenomenal African-American writer, feminist and womanist Audre Lorde offers unpacks female power in such a compelling and current way that it is hard to believe that she wrote it back in 1978!

You have to read it or better still listen to the audio version. Believe me, it is well worth 18 minutes of your life regardless of your gender.

Erotic comes from the Greek word Eros meaning the personification of love in all of its aspects. Born of chaos and personifying creative power and harmony.

No wonder we are intimidated by this incredible energy at times! And yet our erotic energy can provide us with a revitalising, rejuvenating force if we don’t live in fear of it!

In her essay Lorde shares that the erotic has often been used against us and that it has therefore been “made into the confused, the trivial, the psychotic, the pornographic, the plasticised sensation”. 

She also goes on to explain how many of us women have been brought up to “fear the yes in ourselves”, denying our deepest cravings and therefore being reduced to polite, loyal and obedient versions of ourselves.

What an outrage, I say! F%&k the self-negation, pleasing and numbness!

I am just so thankful  that I have been able to turn towards the exploration of the erotic as a source of power and strength in my life. Tantra has really helped me to bridge the gap between the Spiritual and the Erotic and I am consciously choosing to live an unconventional, vibrant life that satisfies and excites me. Eros has awakened my passion and has empowered me to live life on my own terms. And my fingers literally vibrate with gratitude as I type these words!
